Expat Wednesdays with Jetting Around

Expats. Travelers who settled down for a tiny bit? Wanderers who found their place on Earth? Seekers who reached a place where they intended to be? Who are they? Would you like to meet them?Hint: say yes!

The Picktures proudly presents you the guest post series: Expat Wednesdays!

Today, I would love to introduce you to Pola, Polish expat living in Chicago, editor-in-chief of Jetting Around blog.

Home Away From Home

I have a friend in Poland who calls me Windy City Girl. She has since I moved from Krakow to Chicago over ten years ago. Whenever I get an email from her and see the nickname, I wonder at what point I began to feel like a Chicagoan. When did the Windy City become MY CITY?

Pretty quickly, it seems. It may have happened when I got offered my first job downtown, in one of the skyscrapers (they no longer looked intimidating after that). Perhaps becoming a regular at a local jazz club helped me acclimate. Or maybe chanting GO FIRE at the top of my lungs during soccer matches sealed the deal.

All good possibilities, but I think the process started earlier. I became a Chicagoan-in-the-making when I met my husband (and Chicago-native) during his expat years in Krakow.

Following our engagement, we traveled overseas to spend the summer with his family. It was my first time in Chicago and the first time… at a baseball game. Becoming a White Sox fan is what made me initially connect with the city and what later made the move smoother. I didn’t know what my expat life would be like, but I was excited about going to games.

I believe a place becomes your home once you realize you’d miss it if you left. And there’s plenty I would miss about Chicago: local sports, favorite hangouts, stunning architecture that blends the old and the new, and miles of lakeshore. Good thing I’m staying put for a while.
