Expat Wednesdays with Ali’s Adventures

Freiburg

Expats. Travelers who settled down for a tiny bit? Wanderers who found their place on Earth? Seekers who reached a place where they intended to be? Who are they? Would you like to meet them?

Hint: say yes!

The Picktures proudly presents you the guest post series: Expat Wednesdays! Today, I would love to introduce you to Ali, an American expat living in Freiburg, Germany, editor-in-chief of Ali’s Adventures blog.

Here comes her story.

I moved to Freiburg, Germany about three years ago, just after getting married. My husband, who is also American, had already been living here for a few years, and since I already wanted to live in Europe, it made sense for me to move.

Freiburg, Germany

Freiburg isn’t really on the tourist radar, but it’s at the bottom of the Black Forest, which makes it a great base for outdoor activities. It’s also a university town, so it has a youthful vibe and good, inexpensive food.

One of my favorite parts of town is the main market in Münsterplatz in front of the cathedral. I love markets, and I often buy vegetables from the local farmers here.

Another interesting detail in Freiburg is the Bächle. These are like mini canals on the sides of the streets in the old town. They were once used to put out fires, but now they’re just decoration. Legend has it that if you accidentally step into one, you will marry a local.

I also love the old architecture. Freiburg has two remaining gates, and they’re a big reminder of the history behind the city.

My German is still pretty bad and expat life has its stresses, but overall I’m happy to live in Freiburg.
